Les Montachins
Vignoble Gitton - Sancerre

history
Vignoble Gitton is a family-owned estate founded in 1945 by Marcel and Huguette Gitton with just half a hectare of vines. Over three generations, the domaine has grown to around 33 hectares across Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, and Coteaux du Giennois. Today, Pascal and Denise Gitton, together with their daughter Chanel, craft authentic, terroir-driven wines that highlight the diversity of Sancerre’s limestone and flint soils. Each parcel is vinified separately, reflecting the estate’s long-standing commitment to precision, tradition, and the pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc.
Vineyard
The 3.68-hectare Montachins plot is set on Portlandian limestone soils, which give the wine its characteristic minerality and tension. The slopes range from 20 to 30%, and the vines, now mature, yield grapes of great concentration and balance. The Sauvignon Blanc expresses here the full potential of Sancerre’s calcareous terroirs, producing wines that are both structured and elegant.
Winemaking
Harvesting is mechanical, followed by pneumatic pressing and cold settling of the must. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts at controlled low temperatures to preserve freshness and aromatic purity. The wine is aged for six months on total lees in stainless steel tanks, developing texture and depth while maintaining its crisp minerality.
Tasting notes
This cuvée displays a pure and expressive bouquet of citrus fruits, lime zest, and white flowers, supported by a fine flinty minerality. On the palate, it is lively and precise, combining freshness with a subtle roundness. The finish is long and elegant, with delicate saline notes that reflect the limestone soil.
Food pairing
“Les Montachins” pairs beautifully with seafood, shellfish, grilled fish, and goat cheese, especially the local Crottin de Chavignol. It also complements light poultry dishes and vegetable-based cuisine.
